Movie Review: The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (2009) Swedish

Journalist Michael Blomquist (Michael Nykquist ) will be sentenced to  6 months in prison for libeling business tycoon Hans Wennestrom.  Before serving his sentence, Blomquist is asked by Henrik Vanger, (Swen Bertil Taube) another wealthy businessman to investigate the disappearance of his niece Harriet over 40 years ago.  Henrik thinks that another Vanger family member has killed Harriet.  This is hardly a family of choir boys, at least three members of the Vanger family were Nazis during World War 2, but is one of them also a killer?

While Michael is trying to find out who may have killed Harriet a hacker named Lisbeth Salender  (Noomi Rapace) is hacking into Michaels’s computer, she is the same hacker paid to find dirt on Michael during the Winnestrom case, but she concluded that Michael was clean, so she quit trying to find dirt and instead is trying to help Michael.  Lisabeth finds out that there were at least five girls that Harriet knew that were murdered near the same time Harriet went missing, but are any of the murders related to the disappearance of Harriet Vanger?  Is someone trying to kill Michael before he and Lisabeth find the answer?

This is a first rate murder mystery populated by some very sick, twisted people.  The backstory on Lisabeth is a harrowing one.  The main story about the Vangers is even creepier, but it all keeps the viewer riveted to the story.   This was a 2 ½ hour story, and it never lagged for a second.  Michael Nyquist is superb  as the stoic hero, Noomi Rapace gives a hellacious, fierce, unyielding perfomance as Lisabeth.  She is a force of nature in this movie, and carries this movie for long stretches.  I doubt that any American actress can play this role as  well as Noomi Rapace did here.  She was this character.  I cannot wait to read the book. NOT FOR EVERYONE.  There is a graphic rape scene and lots of dead bodies shown, so if you’re not an adult, don’t watch this movie.  The movie was about a half hour too long in my opinion, the last half hour tied everything up too neatly in my opinion, but that is nitpicking about a generally great movie.
