Train Man(Takayuki Yamada)  is a shy, quiet, guy more interested in anime and computers, than girls.  By chance he meets a girl on a train, who is being harassed by a drunken businessman.  The two exchange addresses, and by way of thanks the woman gives him some cups made by Hermes.  Train Man nicknames the woman Miss Hermes (Miki Nakatami)  Being socially awkward around woman, Train Man turns to his equally geeky online friends for help.  They give him advice to keep calling Hermes, and soon Train Man and Miss Hermes are going on actual dates.  But always lingering in the back of Train Man’s mind is the question, does she have a boyfriend?  But he’s too painfully shy to ask that question, or even confess that he loves Miss Hermes.  Miss Hermes seems to like Train Man a lot, and only seems to encourage him to get closer to her, but the pressure of always trying to impress Miss Hermes proves too much for Train Man, and he breaks it off with her.  What happens next? Do they get back together?  Or are they just  two ships passing on a train?

This is a very good movie, about shy, lonely people reaching out for love, risking being hurt, and risking also all the pain of a broken heart.  It’s a very simple story, well told.  There’s a part of me that will always relate to the socially awkward computer geek persona, because it’s a part of who I am.  This movie gives hope to those millions of people and says, you can meet the right person for you, if only you try.  There’s a twist at the end of the movie, which detracts from the main theme of the movie, but I won’t spoil it.  Yamada and Nakatami are wonderful as two shy people meeting someone they are attracted to for the first time.  The two of them are really sweet together and capture the innocence of a first love.  There could have been more character development for Miss Hermes, her character is mysterious throughout,  a little backstory could have helped.  But overall,, this was a gentle, sweet, love story.

Train Man.  All aboard!
