Movie Review: A Perfect Getaway (Steve Zahn, Timothy Oliphant, Mila Jovovich) 2009

Posted: November 25, 2012 in Drama

Cliff (Zahn) and Cydney (Jovovich) are newlyweds honeymooning in Hawaii, when they meet two hitchhikers, Cleo (Marley Shelton) and Kale (Chris Hemsworth) Cliff refuses to give them a ride, and Kale gets angry.  Soon after, Cliff and Cydney meet another couple, Nick (Olyphant) and Gina (Kiele Sanchez) Nick is an Iraqi war vet, and Gina’s father is also in the military.  Cliff is a screenwriter, and Nick wants his story to be made into a movie. While the couples are getting to know each other, there is a rash of murders in Hawaii carried out by a couple, so who is perpetrating the murders?  Is it Cleo and Kale?  Gina and Nick? Or someone no one suspects?

This is an ok movie.  The plot is very predictable, and of course there is a twist, what would a movie like this be without a plot twist?  The problem is that this movie telegraphs every single move it makes, through the screenplay that Cliff is working on.  This movie is very reminiscent of the movie Touristas only less bloody.  Steve Zahn is annoying, he’s annoying before the twist, he’s annoying after the twist. But the rest of the cast make the movie better than it is.  Mila Jovovich is good as seemingly sweet, innocent Cydney , Olyphant is great as the motor-mouthed storyteller, he really builds a well rounded sympathetic character, Sanchez is also excellent as the feisty, athletic, take no prisoners Gina.  She also gives Gina a sweet, vulnerable side.  The cast is better than a movie like this deserves.

A Perfect Getaway.  An imperfect thriller.
