Peter Klaven (Rudd) is a real estate agent who is engaged to Zooey Rice (Rashida Jones).  Peter has always been a “girlfriend guy” and doesn’t really have any guy friends to speak of.  Zooey’s girlfriends start to warn Zooey that a guy without male friends can become needy and clingy, Peter overhears this conversation, and starts his quest for a male best friend.  After a few awkward “man dates” with guys set up by Peter’s brother, mother and Zooey’s friends, Peter stumbles onto Sydney Fife  (Segal) Sydney’s an investment analyst, and a man’s man.  The two meet at an open house for Hulk star Lou Ferrigno. Peter is having trouble selling Ferrigno’s house, Sydney pretends to put a bid on the house, but he’s just there for the free food.  Sydney likes to jam to Rush, eating fish tacos, and not clean up after his dog, Anwar Sadat.  The two hit it off instantly and become fast friends. But after Sydney tells a confidential secret of Zooey’s at the engagement party, the friendship starts to flower.  Zooey’s none too pleased about all the time Peter is spending with Sydney either.  When Peter lends Sydney 8000 dollars, and doesn’t tell Zooey, Peter walks out on Peter, and Peter decides that his friendship with Sydney needs a break.  Do Peter and Zooey get back together?  Do Peter and Sydney save their once flourishing friendship?

Watch this movie.  I can’t tell you how many times I laughed out loud at the first hour of this movie.  I thought I’d like it, but I didn’t think I’d like it this much.  Paul Rudd is hit or miss with me, but he nailed the role of Peter. He captures all the anxiety of meeting a new girlfriend and transfers it into meeting a guy friend.  He tries too hard to be Sydney’s friend, he leaves overly long voicemail messages, tries to make up nicknames for Sydney and fails, and sometimes rambles incoherently. But when Sydney and Peter find they both play music, the two click, and the movie brings out all the joys of having a best friend.  Jason Segal is extremely funny, he’s the kind of friend that any guy would like to have.  Good taste be damned, let’s have fun.  His initial scene with Lou Ferrigno is very funny. He’s also very funny in How I Met Your Mother and Forgetting Sarah Marshall  Rashida Jones is likable as Zooey, who’s trying to adjust to Peter’s new best friend. Director Jon Favreau of Elf fame is hillarious as one of Zooey’s girlfriend’s husbands, Barry.  Jaimie Pressly is more low key than in My Name is Earl, but is still funny.  The whole cast really makes this a fun experience.

I Love You Man.  Love at first sight.
