Comedian Amy Schumer does a stand-up routine at the Apollo in Harlem.

Amy Schumer is the funniest comedian working right now.  Notice I didn’t say the funniest female comedian working right now.  There is no qualifier here, she is flat out, laugh out loud funny.  She does a lot of self-deprecating humor, and it works, because she has a kind of Everywoman persona, so when she makes fun of Los Angeles and the beautiful people that live there, average people can relate.

She talks a lot about sex, if that bothers you, that’s fine, don’t watch it.  It doesn’t bother me in the least and it is funny, just plain funny.  Amy Schumer does what every great comedian does, she takes her life, and makes it funny. There’s no “Two guys walk into a bar.”  This is her life, and her perspective, and that’s what makes it funny.

The special is shot at the Apollo Theater in Harlem, but it looks like a mostly suburbanite crowd.  It would have been interesting to see Schumer perform in front of a mostly black crowd, just to see if she would have gotten the same reaction, I think she would have, but I think it would have been more raucous.  And if black people don’t like a joke, they will let you know it.  I loved watching It’s Showtime at The Apollo in the late 80’s.  If you’ve never seen the show,  when an act bombed on Amateur Night, Sandman Simms would come out with a hook and drag that act off the stage and the crowd would go nuts, that’s the crowd I wanted to see Schumer perform in front of.  That would have been fun. I’m not saying that Schumer would bomb, quite the opposite, I would have liked to see the boisterous reaction of the usual Apollo crowd

Chris Rock directs this performance.   I don’t know what exactly a director does during a stand-up routine.  Did he edit the performance?  They had to get it down to an hour for the HBO performance, but I wouldn’t want to edit anything that she did.  Would you want an angry Amy Schumer looking for you because you cut a joke?  I would not.

Amy Schumer Live at The Apollo:  A really big Schu.
